Will I need to purchase any additional equipment to use the SAT550X Marine Kit?

To enable you to make and receive calls, you will need to purchase a Telit SAT550 Satellite/GSM Phone (option number: 2520.06). It will also be necessary for you to check the rating of your power source. For example, if powered off the mains, the SAT550X Marine Kit requires 110/220V mains to 12V dc adapter (option number: 500.005).

Is the SAT550X Marine Kit water-proof?

The antenna is water-proof, but the base station and hand-set are not.

What are the approximate call charges?

Call charges are defined by your service provider, you will need to contact them for details.

What is a Service Provider?

The satellite phone service is maintained by Globalstar. When you make a satellite call from your SAT550X Marine Kit, the call is routed through GlobalStar's satellite network to the destination phone. Globalstar register the call, and bill your service provider for the cost of that call. The call is included on your bill from your service provider. The GlobalStar service is transparent to the user, and for the purposes of this FAQ, the Service Provider will refer to your traditional mobile communication service provider, not GlobalStar.

How do I switch from GSM mode to satellite calling or visa versa?

There is a satellite menu on the Telit SAT550 Satellite/GSM handset which enables you to perform this operation, further details can be found in the accompanying manual.

The SAT550X loudspeaker doesn't work.

Check the following:
* The SAT550 phone software is at version 7.5.1.
* Make sure that the mini-handset is on-hook when the SAT550X is powered up.
* Check that the rubber block is fitted.
* Check that the mini-handset micro-switch is in contact with the rubber block.
* Check that the loudspeaker jack plug is firmly in place.

How do I find out what  version software is in the SAT550?

There is a menu option on the handset which returns the current software version, for details, check the accompanying manual.

Do I need to use the extenstion tube for antenna?

Yes, because it acts as a DC isolator.

Can I use a plastic antenna bracket?

Use of a Rail clamp mounting of the SAT550X antenna is not satisfactory as the insulation tube and antenna put a large momentum on the rail mount tending to make it slip.

I'm getting 'No Service' or 'Limited Service' text on the display!?

First off, check that you have subscribed to a suitable service. 'Limited Service' can suggest that you do not have both GlobalStar and GSM services.
Secondly, try setting the SAT550 to GlobalStar mode as normal, and keep in on in search mode for several minutes. This kind of global search is normally done with brand-new phones, as the phones do not know which gateway they are in. After a first successful registration (for example in the UK to 'GSTAR-EU1'), if the user subsequently moves to under another gateway and switches the phone on, the phone will repeat the global search. So switching the phone on and off to enable a re-search (taking care to ensure that there are no obstacles in line of site with the sky), should resolve the condition.

Why is the audio level different in GSM & Globalstar modes ?

The audio paths for GSM and Globalstar are quite different and audio level can be controlled in several ways.
For GSM the audio level can be set using the SAT550 phone controls, the volume controls on the side of marine kit base station and the mini-handset thumbwheel.
For Globalstar the audio level can be set using the volume controls on the side of marine kit base station and the mini-handset thumbwheel.

Note that the mini-handset thubwheel can only reduce the audio level that has been set by the base station volume control.

How do I set the maximum audio level ?

The audio levels in GSM & Globalstar modes can be better matched as follows :

  1. Put the SAT550X into Globalstar mode
  2. Set the required level in Globalstar mode by using the using the volume controls on the side of marine kit base station
  3. Put the SAT550X into GSM mode
  4. Fine tune the GSM level using the SAT550 phone controls ( which only effect audio level in GSM mode )
My Telit SAT550X Handset occasionally loses signal and is unable to re-acquire the signal - what's going on?

In certain circumstances, both the Telit SAT550 and SAT551 handsets will lose signal and be unable to regain it. Telit and Globalstar are currently working on the solution for this lose of satellite signal issue, and have provided the following alternative work-arounds for anyone experiencing this problem.

  1. Re-cycle the power of the Handset.
  2. Switch from Globalstar to GSM to Globalstar, by pressing the satellite button on the Handset.
  3. Place the Handset in 'GSM Preferred Mode'. The Handset will power up in GSM mode, the user can switch to Globalstar mode immediately by pressing the satellite button.

While Telit and Globalstar report that the latest SAT550 software version 7.5.4 does not provides a fix for the problem, it is recommended that you upgrade your handset to the latest software version. This upgrade can be performed by your handset supplier.
